codes & conventions of the indie/alternative genre
Performance music videos are common when it comes to an Indie or Alternative group or solo artist. This way the audience gets to see them doing what they love most, and will focus more on the actual content of the song and the talent of the artist. It is thought that the Indie genre focuses more on the passion and music, instead of the success of the artist.
However a post-modern approach is to include a narrative story inbetween the performance in order to break up the music video
and give it a story for the audience. It is also thought that incorporating a narrative into the music video gives the artist more freedom to be creative and imaginitive. It also helps them to compete with other artists in their genre that have a music video that is heavily based around a story, and the artist/group will want to have the most memorable video.
Live performance is also used in a Music Video to promote the artist, as people are able to realise how natural and talented they are, along with their talent and the fact that they sound the same as when they're singing live.
Narrative videos are used in order to entertain the audience as they stand out from the crowd. There are many variations, so the
artist can make the video as wacky as they like. It is also thought that narrative videos hold people's attention better compared to a performance video as what you are seeing is original and constantly changing, leaving people more involved and entertained throughout the whole song. Therefore, by having a mixture of performance and narrative in the music video you can both show the
talent of the artist and leave the audience entertained by the use of story.
Mise-en-scene plays a particularly major part in Indie & Alternative music videos, as indie artists often want to achieve a retro look and create this image through the sets they use, the props the incorporate and also their appearence in the video. The use of sound is
obviously very important when creating a music video, as in a live performance we are hearing it directly from the instruments being played and we can therefore appreciate their talent. Different effects can be added to the sound to either disort it, fade it or even amplify it to convey different emotions in their music video. The use of diegetic sound is used throughout the video to help set the scene at either the end or the beginning before the song is introduced.
