PERFORMANCE
A performance video consists of shots of a band singing, will normally focus on the main singer, and can often include a live stage audience, demonstrated in My Chemical Romance's 'Teenagers.' The video sometimes incorporates real life footage of the band members, such as them preparing for a show, fooling around, signing autographs etc. This can be seen in Take That's 'Never Forget.' A common aspect of performance videos is the inclusion of a motif, which the audience will associate with a certain artist. An example of this would be Will.i.Am who is forever experimenting with different sunglasses as part of his 'quirky' look. The video can be filmed in unusual places due to the lip-syncing, allowing the artists and producers to be creative when choosing a location to film, which is done in Eminem's 'Not Afraid.' A common aspect of a performance music video is the connection that an artist establishes with their audience by looking into the camera. By doing this, the audience gets a feel for the singers emotion and feelings by watching them, and will often develop a sense of sympathy or attachment for the artist. Will Young demonstrates this in his music video to 'Leave Right Now,' where it appears as though he is serenading the audience. The use of common themes and stereotypes are shown within many videos, particularly performance videos. For example, heavy metal artists normally go for a performance piece, for example AC/DC's Thunderstruck. Rap artists are normally located in a club or in the streets, and feature them surrounded with women. This is demonstrated in 50 Cent's 'In Da Club.' Most female artists and boy bands have dance routines which are featured in their videos, shown in Beyonce's 'Crazy in Love' and Backstreet Boy's 'Everybody.'

NARRATIVE
A narrative music video is used to tell a story that is often interpreted from the lyrics, like a short film, and typically has a beginning, middle, and end. Sometimes, the video can be used to promote or sponsor a film, for example 'Pure Shores' by All Saints, which is the soundtrack for 'The Beach' and is used to promote the film. Sometimes an artist will use certain conventions such as the fast pace, and the shots & cuts that are used to mimic a film genre. Science fiction is a very popular genre used in music videos, and can be seen in Katy Perry's 'E.T.' music video. It is also used in Maroon 5's 'Wake Up Call,' where there are many different aspects in the video that are reminiscent of James Bond and similar Thriller movies.
For example, they incorporate murder, guns, roulette tables, fancy cars, top secret files, stunts etc. A narrative video usually includes the artist, who is incorporated into the plot. However, some artists prefer to cast other actors into their music video, which is done in Rihanna and Eminem's 'Love the Way you Lie,' where they cast famous actors Dominic Monaghan (LOST) and Megan Fox (Transformers.) In other cases, actors have experimented with briefly appearing in the music videos. This can be seen in Ed Sheeran's 'A Team,' where the singer features in the video by walking past the actress and buying a copy of her Big Issue, having a brief conversation with her and then moving on.

CONCEPTUAL
A conceptual music video is a video that portrays a certain idea or concept to the audience, and normally has a message that will have a dramatic impact on the audience.Conceptual videos include two aspects. The first of which, symbolic, is the use of symbols in order to build meaning, whether this is through set, costume, mise-en-scene or any other media techniques. This is shown in P!nk's 'Who Knew' music video, which is set in a fair ground. The blurring rides are representative of the lack of control she has, which is told in the lyrics. The flashing stars and bright lights of the fair ground are symbolic of her status as a 'star' and implies that often celebrities find it hard to keep up with what's going on around them, as everything is hectic and crazy. P!nk's hair is dyed, and looks 'clown-like,' implying that she is humiliated and embarrassed by the situation she sings about.
THE USE OF VIDEOS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY
performance - green day's 'american idiot'
Green Day's 'American Idiot' demonstrates the use of performance in a music video. The video is interesting, as you see a clear representation of the bands personality, and the 'star image' they are trying to portray. We particularly get to see the characteristics of Billy Armstrong, or "Billy Joe," in the video. His gestures and body language tell us that he is rebellious and unruly, which reflects the lyrics of not wanting to fit into the constraints of society, but be more original and unique. He is wearing dark make-up, which stereo-typically isn't used on men; this shows that he is going against normality and creating his own insubordinate image. The use of dark eyeliner becomes Billy Joe's motif, as it is something that he does in all of his videos and that many people would associate with his character. The green slime is representative of their defiance of rules and regulations, and reflects their attitude. It represents them as very 'hardcore' and is also representative of their grunge characteristics. When the lead singer has his hand on his chest, it is meant to be a patriotic gesture. However, when referring to the lyrics we can tell that he is mocking the government, and when theoretically 'shooting' himself, it shows his disregard for the governments rules, signifying that his star image is rebellious and fearless.
conceptual - r.e.m.'s 'everybody hurts'
An example of a conceptual music video would be R.E.M's 'Everybody Hurts.' The music video features a number of people in their cars, commuting to/from work, on road trips, with their family etc. There is a traffic jam which leaves the characters stranded in their cars for a long period of time. The concept of the song is that people are often suffering despite how they may look on the outside. Whether it is a big or small issue, a person can always be troubled or in pain. The thoughts of the people appear as subtitles, telling the audience how they are feeling. The lyrics of the video are related to the video; 'They're all stuck.' This is relevant to the music video as the thoughts are all stuck inside the characters heads, who choose not to voice them, but instead keep to themselves. At the end of the song, the band (R.E.M) get out of their car, and are followed by the people in their cars. This demonstrates the concept of unity and release, and inspiration.
