intertextuality
Iggy azalea's 'fancy' vs. clueless
Clueless is a 90's film that looks at the life of ultra-rich teenagers when in a Beverly Hills high school. "Cher and Dionne both named after great singers of the past that now do infomercials, are pampered upper-class girls who care less about getting good grades than wearing the right clothes and being as popular as possible." Iggy Azelea takes inspiration from the film, and copies many of the scenes and images that are seen in the film for her music video for 'Fancy.' This demonstrates intertextuality extremely well, as the whole video is based on the world famous film. In some parts of the video, it follows the movie shot for shot.
Iggy replicates many of the messages in the film, the most obvious one is that material things are crucial in life. The second, that girls rule all. The lyrics talk about how people should respect and admire Iggy, because she is the 'realest' and 'fancy.' The lyrics are very centred on her success and how she should be percieved as flawless and incredible; 'remember my name,' 'can't you taste this gold?'
She is shown as desirable; 'you should want a bad bitch like this' successful; 'put my name in bold.' and inspirational 'got the whole world askin' how I does that' through her lyrics.
She is shown as desirable; 'you should want a bad bitch like this' successful; 'put my name in bold.' and inspirational 'got the whole world askin' how I does that' through her lyrics.
Her lyrics also talk about material things such as shopping in department stores, which is links the song to the film, which is centred around girls who are obseesed with riches and having the material things in life.
Intertextuality between the film and music video is shown through the mise-en-scene. They are both set in a school, although the music video is slightly more updated with a whiteboard instead of a chalkboard, and more up to date materials and technology. While sticking to the film, the video also shows how we have progressed from 1995.
Costume is also used to demonstrate intertextuality. The same patterns and textures can be seen in both Iggy's costume and the main character's costume. The costumes of the other characters are similar, however the costumes in Iggy's 'Fancy' are more contemporary, again showing the difference and progression in time, particularly fashion.
