idea generation & development of my poster
initial ideas
When first designing my poster, I wanted to split the page into three, and have each section focus on a facial feature (eyes, nose, mouth) I thought this would look visually creative and interesting. I was inspired to do this by Examples 'Kickstarts' music video where facial and body features of different people were merged to create interesting and bizarre imagery.
However, when experimenting with shots not only was it hard to put this idea into practice, I found that the concept was not related to my own music video, and therefore there would be no synergy between my supporting products and my video.
My second idea was to use an image of my protagonist in the bath, and to use a ripple/water reflection on Photoshop. This would represent how there is more to a person than just one side, relating to how homeless people are often overlooked by society and ignored, quite often being considered as worthless or deserving of the life that they end up living. It would provoke my audience to think deeper into the concept of homelessness, and would lead them to be sympathetic towards the protagonist. Alongside this, the image is representative of the water imagery that is featured in my music video. Using a Photoshop tutorial, I was able to create a water reflection of my subject in the bath. However, the outcome was not as desired, and I found that it did not look as effective as I expected. The final image looked slightly cheesy, meaning it did not have the meaningful concept behind it. I therefore scrapped the idea, and went back to the drawing board.
My final idea was to use the same image of the protagonist in the bath, but instead to manipulate the colours to make the image effective. I decided to change the image to black and white to show how the life was being drained from her by society and the world around her. However, I created a mask for her eyes, changing the saturation so that they were vibrant, and stood out from the rest of the photo. This was to represent how she was fighting against society to regain her life. The music video opens with the protagonist in the bath, and then continues to show her life as a homeless teenager. It appears that she has had enough of life, and so tries to drown herself. However, she opens her eyes and is back in the bath; it is implied that she survived drowning and was reminiscing the ordeal. The black and white of her body is representative of the beginning of the video, where her life is bleak and unsatisfying. The vibrancy of her eyes is representative of the redemption and recovery at the end of the video, where her life carries on. The focus of the eyes creates the synergy between all three products, and links them together. The eyes are considered a gateway into the soul, meaning my audience feel more connected to the character and therefore are more interested in the story.
