target audience results and analysis
QUESTIONNAIRE responses
question one (gender)
My first question seeks to establish the predominant gender of my audience. By establishing this, I would be able to determine what elements should be incorporated into my music video.
It is obvious from my results that the majority of my audience are female and I therefore should consider the representation of the gender within my music video. My protagonist is a female, and I have decided to portray her as innocent and vulnerable. Many teenage girls can feel vulnerable as they are often confronted with stress and at this time are discovering who they are. With the majority of my audience being female I believe that this representation of the female will be the most captivating for the audience, as they will understand how the subject feels.
question two (age)
The second question of my survey determines the age of my target audience. By doing so, I know what actors to use, and what content to include in my music video.
It is evident from my results that my target audience is teenagers and young adults. This means that I should consider how to represent age within my music video. Often, teens and young adults feel misunderstood not only by their families but also by society. I therefore think that the representation of older people (30+) should be negative. I have chosen to have the subjects Dad in the narrative, and throughout the music video I will portray him as selfish and neglectful in order to emphasize how teenagers often feel they are treated. I will also demonstrate the feeling of isolation from the older generation in my video through the mise-en-scene. In most shots the subject will be alone, and in any shots with people she will be ignored and shown to be invisible to the world around her. This creates a negative representation of adults, which my audience will be keen to see. The representation of teenagers will be positive, as they are my target audience and will feel gratified to be shown in a positive light. Often, the media portrays teenagers as bad-tempered and ungrateful. Teenagers would argue, however, that they are just misunderstood and trying to find a place in the world; this is what my narrative will focus on in order to captivate the audience. The trauma that my protagonist goes through demonstrates the impact that society and media can have on a persons life - feeling alone and neglected to the point that you feel you do not belong anywhere. This will cause the audience to consider how society plays a huge part in our world and will hopefully have an impact on how they view the world.
question three (sexuality)
The third question of my survey seeks to establish the romantic desires of my audience. By discovering this I can decide what genders would be involved in any romance in the narrative. If my audience was predominantly homosexual then I could show a homosexual relationship in order for the majority of my audience to relate to the narrative. If my audience was predominantly heterosexual I might want to show a homosexual relationship to be controversial and have an impact on my audience: it would be unexpected, and therefore would leave them more entertained by the narrative.
Everyone who answered my questionnaire was heterosexual. This means that when appealing to my audience I should consider how to represent my subject. In this case, I have decided for my protagonist to be straight. By doing so, my audience would be able to relate to her more, which will help them to empathise with the subject. This empathy will contribute to the representation of gender, and demonstrate the vulnerability of the female.
question four - eight (demographics)
These questions in my survey provide me with the demographics of my target audience. By determining the demographic of my audience I can consider what to incorporate into my music video in order to appeal to them. I can also consider marketing of my CD album, as I can determine how much disposable income they have, and how much they would be able to pay for my product.
Having the majority of my
question 9 & 10 (personal interests)
Discovering my audience's musical interests helps me to ensure that I am using the right song, and am incorporating the relevant codes and conventions in order to entertain my audience. My results tell me that the most popular genre of music for teenagers and young adults is Indie. My results show that other music genres thought to be popular by teens and young adults include rock, pop, and the alternative genre. My chosen song is 'High Hopes' by Kodaline, whose style is Indie Rock and Alternative. I can therefore establish that in order to target my audience of teenagers and young adults, the song style is effective and will captivate my audience.
