INITIAL MUSIC VIDEO IDEAS
The song I have chosen to do for my music video is 'When the Sun Goes Down' by the Arctic Monkeys. I would like to incorporate
both Narrative and Performance into my video, as it is a common convention for the genre of the song. The lyrics of the song are focused around the idea of a prostitute and one of her customers, who turns into a different person 'when the
sun goes down.' I would like to focus my narrative on the message in the lyrics, so therefore will be looking at the life of a prostitute. However, I want my audience to be sympathetic to the female, and the male to be perceived as more of an antagonist. Therefore, I will use Mulvey's male gaze to make the female seem vulnerable, and the male manipulative. I want to cast a young female to further imply that she is innocent.
The opening verse to the song is quite slow, and the lyrics include the phrase "I wonder what went wrong so that the had to roam
the streets." Therefore for the beginning, I wanted to show an initial shot of her on the streets, incorporating flashbacks to the tragedy of how she ended up being homeless and turning to prostitution. I want to show the young female being abused and neglected by her family, as she would again be seen as defenseless and vulnerable.
The second verse to the song is also slow, but begins to pick up pace. At this part, I would focus on the male, as it does in the lyrics. I would like to show him sat in a grubby house, drinking and smoking. By doing this, the audience will perceive the male as worthless and "scummy" as described in the song.
As the song picks up pace, the man would leave his house and approach the young prostitute on the street corner. As the guitars
and drums come in, a montage would start. I want to show the concept of a relationship forming between the man and woman. It would shows continuous cuts, a concept that is shown in Example's 'Kickstarts.' They would be at the males house, and the clips would be looking at the interaction between the couple, i.e. kissing, touching, drinking etc. I would try to achieve the idea that they
are forming a connection, and that he is repeatedly using her services as he has formed an attachment to her. I want to show passion between the couple, so would incorporate shots such as him grabbing her waist and picking her up.
In order to show the selfishness and nastiness of the male, the narrative would end with the male leaving his house, and walking straight past the young girl, and greeting another girl, taking her back to his house. This would leave the audience feeling sympathetic towards the female, which is the outcome I would like to achieve. The message I would like to get across with my music video is the idea that men often manipulate women, and see them as objects of desire, and think they are disposable. I would like to show the female's view on this, and how it leaves them feeling worthless and insignificant.
In between the narrative, there would be performance shots of the band playing their instruments, and a lead singer. I want to incorporate close-ups of the lead singer looking directly into the camera in order to form a connection with the audience, resulting in the audience being more transfixed on the video, and interested in the message within the lyrics and video. I also want to show a live performance as it would tell the audience that the band are passionate and talented, again showing that the lyrics and the things that the band sing about are important.
